The City of Aiken Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism is proud to announce the selection of Citizens Park for the 2015 Dixie Boys and Junior Boys World Series. Following a competitive process and a presentation by City staff, Athletics Superintendent, Jeff Metz, was notified of the award late Friday evening. The tournament will take place in August of 2015.
Mr. Metz feels confident that the hard work of City staff in hosting the state tournaments this past year played a key role in the committee’s decision to select Aiken for this national event. He stated, “I feel like Aiken was selected because of our outstanding facilities and ability to host both age groups in one location. Our maintenance, tourism and athletics staff worked hard as a team to put on a great tournament and that was very significant in being awarded the 2015 World Series.”
City staff traveled to Covington, Georgia on Friday, September 6th to place a bid for the tournament. The vote was taken on Friday evening and staff was promptly notified by Jim Armour, National Director for Dixie Boys Baseball. The thirteen and fourteen year old tournaments consist of eleven state champions from across the southeast and the Aiken host team.
Mr. Metz added, “We could not have bid on this tournament without the cooperation of our City of Aiken hotels. They were eager to partner with us to bring the tournament here and worked well with us to make this presentation much stronger.”
The City’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department host tournaments throughout the year at city facilities. The department’s primary mission is to enhance the quality of life for the Aiken community.
